JOHN E. DEAR
Enlisted in the Army Feb. 6 1963
Basic training at Ft. Carson Colo. 2 months
AIT at Ft. Sill Okla. 2 months, trained on Honest John Rocket rail Artillery
Airborne training Ft. Benning Ga. 3 weeks
Deployed to Korea in Aug. of 1962. Was assigned to the 20’th F.A. 1’st Cav. Div. for pay
and support but was a sentry dog handler at MSA 20 for 12 months and two weeks
Returned to the states in Sept. of 63 and went through nuclear war head school at Ft.
Sill.
Assigned to the 77’th F.A. Ft. Lewis Wash. But because my records had been
“misplaced” in transit was placed TDY to the Provost Marshal office as a prison chaser.
Took the army 7 weeks to “reconstruct” my records and by that time the slot with the
77’th was filled so I got re-assigned to the Continental Army Command at Dugway
Proving Grounds Dugway Utah for five months and then got orders to the 79’th F.A. 7’th
U.S. Army in Giessen Germany until May of 1967 when my enlistment was up. Was told
that if I re-enlisted again I would be going to Vietnam and since they did not have rail
artillery in Vietnam I would probably be going over as a dog handler. I did not like the
est. life expectancy of a combat dog handler so, I came home to the states and took my
separation at Ft. Dix New Jersey may of 1967
